awesome music from the #1 voted band in Coosada, AL
DK's got a pretty long history, starting back in the 80's. ...yeah dude, Pat, Brad, Josh, & Stu were all friends in the late 80's early 90's... ...lawd.
So here's a bunch of random crap that we've gathered/created/written/whatever, as far back as we can find it.
#1 - Meet the crew - Preeshee, Brownie, & Shades. Shades has a plan to help Preeshee... hop in the sock mobile & get going!!
Josh: "Very nice! I like it. "
Brad: "well, it's rockin'! I would have over complicated it..."
Josh: "Holler holler holler."
How did you all meet?
Josh:
Yes, I actually had nothing to do with the band's formation, lol! That was all Pat and my brother.
How did you come up with the name, Disowning Kaleb?
Josh:
Yeah, that was really, I think, before we even decided to dedicate out band to Jesus Christ. Yep, we started out as a secular band. Just a few Christians who played music, basically. We just never really got rid of the name =)
I know you guys have made a new album, tell us about it.
Josh:
We spent more time, very likely, on that album than any other recording we've done. We try to reach non-Christians with this album. Really, that's our goal in general and this album has songs speaking of heartbreak, love, and, most importantly, the grace we have through Jesus, that reach out to people. Many non-Christians are turned off to hymns and modern praise songs, unfortunately. We write songs with the same truths in a fashion they may be more receptive to. We want to take that first step in reaching people with the gospel of Jesus Christ, even through something as simple as music.
Which songs are your favorites?
Josh:
I'd have to say In Your Gravity and Another Angel. In Your Gravity is just a straight up rockin' praise song that speaks of being ever receptive to Christ and letting yourself be 'pulled' to Him and his wisdom and love and mercy.
Now let’s turn this a bit personal. This month we are talking about love and what that means. What does love mean to you guys?
Josh:
Love has no strings attached. It is agape, which is Greek for 'unconditional'. The love of a father and mother for their son puts it into perspective for me. If a child misbehaves, the parents may punish him. Later he may come back to them and apologize for what he has done. He will most assuredly misbehave in the future and the same thing will happen. This doesn't mean that he's suddenly not a member of the family when he misbehaves and then a part of the family when he repents, and so on and so forth. He is a deeply loved son, regardless. The same can be said for those who are in Christ.
If you had one verse to pick out of scripture about love, which one would that be and why?
Josh:
1 Corinthians 13:4 - Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. I like this verse, and that whole chapter really, because it sums up what love is so simply. In todays world where so many have such a skewed view on the definition of that word, it's even more impactful.
How did you all meet?
Brad:
Like Pat said, he and I met at Morningview Baptist Church when we were in the fourth grade. We were both pretty big Ninja Turtle fans at the time, so that kick started a lifelong friendship. We used to sit in the church balcony on Sundays drawing pictures of the Fearsome Four (Leo, Donnie, Mikey, and Raph… They fight with honor for cryin’ out loud.)
I’m lucky that Pat stayed my friend even after I went through several phases of teenage stupidity, most of which he (and Josh) still make fun of me for today.
How did you come up with the name, Disowning Kaleb?
Brad:
Again, like Pat said, He and the lead guitarist at the time were on the phone trying to come up with a band name for their future multi-platinum rockstar group. A couple words (Disowning + Caleb [with a K of course]) sounded better than dumb, so they kept it.
The name Disowning Kaleb is now (15+ years later) a source of pride for the three of us. We love this group and love the music that God allows us to create (and/or creates through us).
I know you guys have made a new album, tell us about it.
Brad:
Finding Mr. Smith is somewhat of a journey through the History of DK. Several of the songs (and one of the drums tracks) were created around the turn of the millennium. We took a break from recording big rock in the middle of writing the songs for FMS and created Hollowbody. Then, once we figured out how to do our own recording, we went back, wrote the rest of and recorded Finding Mr. Smith.
We tried our hardest to get the best representation of our songs possible, but still have enough money left over to feed our families. That’s a tough balance. I feel like we accomplished our goal.
Which songs are your favorites?
Brad:
Unfortunately, my favorite songs on Finding Mr. Smith are not the ones I helped create. Dream and Another Angel are my favorites off of this album, for different reasons. Pat explained Another Angel, and why it’s so important to him, which makes it important to DK. Dream is also a very personal, emotionally involved song. Plus, Dream lets me play the drums in a way that makes it sound like I almost know what I’m doing!
Now let’s turn this a bit personal. J This month we are talking about love and what that means. What does love mean to you guys?
Brad:
Love is an incredible idea, a difficult practice, and the most rewarding foundation for a relationship there is. It can be a heart pounding feeling for a new girlfriend, a driving force that causes a parent to discipline their child (even when we want to give them the world), and it can be a decision that holds a marriage intact. On top of all that though, God is Love. Jesus is Love. He (they) suffered for me because they love me and it was the only way to have me around for an eternity. Solely because God loves me and wants me around Him, He sent His one and only son (something I could NEVER do) to suffer and die. Again, just so I’ll be around Him for eternity.
If you had one verse to pick out of scripture about love, which one would that be and why?
Brad:
Matthew 22:37 – 40
… “’Love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the law and the prophets hang on these two commandments.”

Brad Reminisces:
Dude, DK played this show one time - we'd decided to be SUPER stripped down. it was Josh, Pat, and me on a djembe or something. We had 3-4 songs we were doing, something like that. One was Ever End, I know - because I kept goofing up the BG Vox by singing the wrong octave... like Crash Test Dummies were singin' DK or some junk. Pat stopped the song a couple times and was shaking his head... "you're not right... you're too low... it's ruining the song..." or whatever he said... eventually, I figured out what I goofed up.
Another song was "O Come the Power" - a completely brilliant arrangement of "O Come Emmanuel" and "There is Power in the Blood" that Pat and Josh built that just blows my mind still today - Check it out on youtube.
BUT THEN - we covered Annie Lennox's "Love Song for a Vampire" I'M SO GLAD Josh brought this song up & we covered it. I loved performing this song SO very much, the melody is ROCKIN', and the little nuances that it carries with it add so much... lyrically, it's a genius song, and the harmonies break hearts... anyway, I loved playing this song so much, that I stuck the lyric sheet in my wallet after we played that set, and I've carried it with me every day ever since. that's where the pictures came from - I've carried that lyric sheet with me for about 13 years.
Sometimes it may seem like we've fallen off the map because we're not
gigging any lately, but we actually have a lot of stuff going on here
at camp dk. We're in the process of finishing up the core instruments on
our upcoming full length cd. We still have to add the extras, i.e.
tambourine, shakers, etc. We also have a contest going to see who can
design the next disowning kaleb t-shirt. For full details on that visit
www.facebook.com/disowning.kaleb
As far as recording goes, we're also on to my favorite part of
recording...the background vocals. I fell in love with this part of the
process when we were recording Hollowbody. The fact that I can't sing
doesn't matter. Brad and Josh can come up with some pretty amazing
ideas. Especially Brad, he's like the Thomas Edison of background vocals.
Big guitars are awesome. I love a great drum beat. But nothing tops the
way it sounds when you've got 3 or 4 vocals dancing with each other in
perfect(thanks auto-tune!) harmony. Vocals can really make or break a
song for me. You can have the best music in the world....but if you've
got a crummy vocal, I'll pass. I could name some big bands that I just
can't stomach due to vocals but in an attempt to not offend I'll hold my
tongue.
The t-shirt contest is just getting started and we got 10 submissions
already. Keep them coming. Don't worry if you've don't know how to put
it on a t-shirt template, just send the artwork. We'll handle the rest.
Again send as many as you want. The top 5 will be picked by dk on April
25th and put up on our facebook for the general public to vote on.You
get the most votes and you win. You win, your design goes on our new
t-shirt. All the finalists will get a free download of our new cd.
That's about it for this update. Keep checking back we're gonna have one
of these little blurbs every week. Tell your peeps!
